Indonesia Report from Cyrus Boyum:
It has been a while since my last report so I will get right into it. I have been working the Java coastlines again. And boy has it been a nice surprise. A recent trip to G-land provided epic flat days with good viz in the 50 - 75ft range. That is good for the area. The water was warm and the fish were everywhere. I speared my first Napolean Wrasse. Not a huge one, since I have seen plenty over 100lbs, but this one was about 45lbs. It was a clean shot that nearly stoned the fish, high and right behind the head and gill plate. People were not kidding how tasty that fish is! I fed the entire camp of 11 guest with that Napolean, and I must say it was right up there with the best fish meal I have had in a long time. Along with the Napolean I took a handful off decent size snapper, a few Trevally, and a nice Pampano over the 2 days I dove. The wet nights prevented any access to the remote reefs past the G-land surf camp, but I can only imagine that it would have certainly been alive up there as well.
East Java and the rest of Indonesia experienced a really wet season from the end of December - about 2 weeks ago. I think that is a great sign for a good fishing year. Especially in east Java it was clear that the trails and erosion from the rain would have restricted access to the best fishing grounds, giving the place a solid 5 - 6 month rest!
